Taxi Dancer Leads Transpac as Eight Have Shot at Record
Led by Mitchell Rouse’s 70-foot Taxi Dancer, eight boats in the Los Angeles-to-Honolulu yacht race Wednesday were on a record-breaking pace.
Most of the Class A yachts were well past the halfway point and were sailing in 20-knot northeast winds.
Taxi Dancer was 953 miles from the finish at Diamond Head at the 8 a.m. roll call, with Paul Simonsen’s Mongoose six miles astern.
The first boat to finish would have to cross the line by midnight Saturday (9 p.m., Honolulu time) in order to beat the current elapsed-time record of 8 days 11 hours held by the 67-foot Merlin. Merlin is sailing in this year’s Transpac but has yet to appear among the Class A leaders.
