Hauke Fuhlbruegge of East Germany upset Olympic champion Peter Rono of Kenya in the 1,500 meters at the Olympic Day Mobil Grand Prix track and field meet in East Berlin.

Fuhlbruegge won with a strong kick in 3 minutes 36.87 seconds. Rono was second in 3:37.15, and another Kenyan, Kip Cheruyiot, was third in 3:37.72.

American winners included Henry Thomas of UCLA in the 200 meters with a time of 20.61 seconds, Tom Simon in the 400 with a time of 45.04, and Tonie Campbell in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.48. Jan Wohlschlag was the only American woman to win an event, clearing 6 feet 4 1/4 inches in the high jump.
