Merger Activity Drops: Despite several large corporate acquisitions proposed in the first half of 1989, merger activity is lagging behind the pace set last year, according to a report by Securities Data Co. An analysis by Securities Data of deals worth $10 million or more showed that there was $164.9 billion in activity in the first half of 1989, representing 695 announced deals, compared to $209.5 billion in 784 deals in the comparable period last year. The report also showed that only 24 deals worth $1 billion or more were reported in the period, compared to 52 a year earlier.
