Trick to Mowing lawn Is not to Cut Too Deeply

Did you know you are not supposed to remove more than one third of the surface during any one cutting with the lawn mower? This advice comes from James Watson, chief agronomist for Toro Co.

Watson says cutting more than a third of the surface in any one cutting reduces its ability to “photosynthesize,” which is the manufacture of food necessary for the growth process.

Grass grows from its base, not its tip. Growing points are located at the crown--the surface between the roots and the leaf rather than at the tips of the blade or stem.

Watson says mowing does not harm the plant, as long as no more than one-third of the surface is removed.
