From Times staff and wire service reports

Men prisoners in San Francisco County Jail will be given condoms to try to prevent the spread of AIDS, Sheriff Michael Hennessy said today.

Aiding and abetting sex between prisoners is an offense under California law, and Hennessy has for two years been seeking official assurances that he would not be prosecuted for his free condoms scheme. He said he decided to go ahead with it when the district attorney’s office told him any legal opinion on the matter would be too complex.
