An adage from Shakespeare says “neither a borrower nor a lender be.” It turns out that President Bush is both.

First Lady Barbara Bush let the world in on the secret Thursday when she told reporters that a raincoat the President gave to an elderly woman who stood in a storm to welcome him to Budapest on Tuesday was not his own.

Mrs. Bush told reporters traveling on Air Force One from Budapest to Paris that the President had borrowed the coat from a member of his Secret Service security detail.

“This poor man is out one coat,” she said of the agent. She added that the President planned to buy the agent a new coat.
