From Times wire services

Texas Air Corp. is reportedly negotiating to purchase a package of Boeing 737-300 jets worth as much as $2.8 billion with some delivery dates as early as 1991, airline analysts said today.

The Houston-based parent company of Continental Airlines and Eastern Airlines confirmed that it has been talking to aircraft vendors but declined to discuss any negotiations with Boeing Co.

But Robert J. Joedicke, an advisory director on the airline industry for Shearson Lehman Hutton Inc., said analysts have known about the Texas Air-Boeing discussions for some time.

“All they’re doing is basically reserving a position for deliveries five years down the road,” Joedicke said today. “Prudence would say they would have to have some aircraft on delivery by the early 1990s.”

The narrow-body Boeing jets would primarily serve Houston-based Continental.
