Black nationalist leader Nelson Mandela will have his family around him for the first time in more than a quarter of a century for a 71st birthday lunch on Tuesday in his prison bungalow, lawyers said today.

The gathering, including Mandela’s wife, Winnie, three of his five children and at least eight of his grandchildren, will be a reunion and not a party, according to Cape Town lawyer Dullah Omar.

“It will be an occasion with a strong theme of sadness because after the reunion they will leave Mr. Mandela to resume his lonely life,” Omar told reporters.
