Further Proceedings in Marcos Case OKd

U.S. District Judge Mariana R. Pfaelzer ruled in Los Angeles on Monday that lawyers for the Republic of the Philippines could begin questioning the primary defendants in a massive civil fraud case originally filed three years ago against former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, his wife, Imelda, and others.

Discovery proceedings involving the Marcoses and the other named defendants in the case had been halted two years ago after a federal appeals court threw out the suit, saying U.S. courts had no jurisdiction in the matter. That ruling was overturned by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The suit asserts that the Marcoses and their associates looted the Philippines of about $5 billion and seeks to recover the money, much of which allegedly is sequestered in foreign banks, for the Filipino government.

The Marcoses have been indicted on federal criminal charges in New York based on similar allegations.
