Herbert von Karajan, longtime conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and driving force of the Salzburg Festival, was buried Monday night in the family crypt in his hometown of Anif, near Salzburg, Austria. Karajan died Sunday of heart failure at age 81. A religious service in the local parish church attended by a few family members and guests preceded the burial. “It was the wish of his wife Eliette Mouret and his daughters, Isabelle and Arabelle, that the ceremony be held without a furor in a small circle of relatives and friends,” a spokesman said. Karajan was to have opened this year’s Salzburg Festival July 27, conducting the Verdi opera “Un Ballo in Maschera.” Festival officials said Tuesday that Sir Georg Solti, music director of the Chicago Symphony, will replace Karajan as the conductor of the premiere and three other performances. However, a conductor still is to be named for three additional performances of the opera and a concert with the Vienna Philharmonic in August that Karajan was scheduled to lead.
