The San Diego Padres traded pitcher Walt Terrell to the New York Yankees for third baseman Mike Pagliarulo.

The Padres also obtained minor league pitcher Don Schulze, who had two starts with the Yankees this month before being sent back to triple-A Columbus, Ohio.

Pagliarulo was hitting .197 in 74 games with four home runs and 16 runs batted in. He had 28 homers in 1986 and 32 in 1987 before slipping to 15 last season.

Terrell is 5-13 with a 4.01 earned-run average in 19 starts for the Padres. He won 15, 15 and 17 games for the Detroit Tigers in 1985-1987 before slipping to 7-16 last season.
