Three mountain climbers were killed and two injured in an avalanche as they tried to climb the 19,510-foot Alpamayo peak in the Andes, police said Sunday.

The five, all Spaniards, were hit by the avalanche Friday as they scaled the northern face of the peak near Huaraz, 400 miles north of Lima, police said by telephone from Huaraz.

A Peruvian guide who survived the avalanche brought a rescue team, which recovered the bodies of Oscar Sima Revilla, Jose Luis Sea and Gabriel Lezcano.
