Chinese delegates walked out of an international conference today when Soviet physicist Andrei D. Sakharov called for condemnation of China’s violent suppression of its student democracy movement.

“We cannot forgive or disregard the conduct of the Chinese government and we must find ways to demonstrate this attitude,” the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize winner said at the opening session of the 39th Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs.

The Chinese delegates waited outside the conference room for Sakharov’s speech to end.

“We can build peace through international cooperation--not by interfering in the internal affairs of other countries,” said one of the delegates, Prof. Shi Zhongben of Beijing University.
