Forest fires fanned by dry winds raged out of control in Canada’s northern Manitoba province, forcing thousands to flee and straining resources of communities trying to absorb those evacuated, authorities said. A total of 14,500 people have fled their homes as one of the worst fire seasons on record devastated a wide area in Manitoba and neighboring Saskatchewan, said Cindy Stevens, a spokeswoman for the Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization.
