A record number of candidates registered for an election in September that will be South Africa’s biggest and the ruling National Party’s most important since it came to power in 1948. State radio said more than 600 candidates were accepted at nomination centers throughout the country for the first simultaneous election to the segregated white, Indian and Colored (mixed-race) chambers of Parliament. In a possible sign of protest from the country’s 26 million voteless blacks, two people were killed when three bombs exploded at nomination centers in Cape Town. Bombings, shootings and arson marked South African elections in 1984, 1987 and 1988.
