Greece is about to get its first private TV stations. The coalition government in Athens said Tuesday it would grant television licenses for two private networks, breaking the state’s monopoly. Greek television and radio have been under state control since their inception, but the center-right New Democracy party, the majority member in the Conservative-Communist coalition government, made private TV a part of its campaign platform for last month’s elections. The new licenses will be given to two publishing consortiums.
