Thatcher in Paris

Share

I agree with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in questioning the originality of the French Declaration of the Rights of Man (Part I, July 17). She said that the ideas expressed dated to the ancient Greeks and were even contained in the English Magna Charta, which came before the Rights of Man by more than 550 years.

However, I wish that she had also cited the Ten Commandments and the Torah, wherein the essence of Judaism is expressed as “man’s dealings with man.”

At any age or by any people the ideas proclaimed, no matter who originated them, certainly deserve being celebrated and hopefully acted on.
