The opposition leader in Myanmar, formerly Burma, has been on a hunger strike since the country’s military leaders placed her under house arrest eight days ago, Western diplomats said today.

They said Aung San Suu Kyi, secretary of the National League for Democracy, demanded to be transferred to Yangon’s Insein jail and kept under the same conditions as supporters who were arrested as part of a crackdown on her party last week.

The 44-year-old daughter of assassinated independence hero Aung San has taken only water since she was put under house arrest and accused of endangering the state. Diplomats said Aung San Suu Kyi’s British husband, Michael Aris, was also at the house.
