West Wins Friendly Rivalry in OT, 2-1

Share

It was a game for the bronze medal--and perhaps some bragging rights, too.

When the West met the South in a field hockey medal match Friday night at Cameron University, 24 of the 30 players who suited up were already well acquainted with each other: all from neighboring cities in Westlake Village and Ventura County.

A penalty-stroke goal in overtime by Benjamin Maruquin of Ventura that gave the West a 2-1 victory. The same teams had battled to a tie--appropriately enough--in round-robin play.

Maruquin’s goal came with 7:44 remaining after a South defender was called for tripping.

Maruquin had tied the score with 15:22 left in the first half, forcing the overtime.

The South took a 1-0 lead 5:15 into the game on a goal by Jeff Horrocks of Newbury Park.

The South outshot the West 15-6, but West goalkeeper Tom Vano of Simi Valley was credited with only one save.
