U.S. Strategy for Nuclear Response

Share

The last news I saw at bedtime was on TV, showing the Soviet sailors at the Norfolk, Va., Naval Station, leaving me with a glowing feeling that the world may at last be coming to its senses. The first thing I read this morning was “U.S. Shifts Nuclear Response Strategy,” followed by “New Formula Designed to Eliminate Soviet Leadership Early In Conflict.” What kind of black humor could this be? What insane minds was your Times staff writer exposing? I read on: “Quietly and without any debate, the Bush Administration is preparing drastic changes in the basic U.S. strategy for fighting a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. . . .”

This included “discreet” killing of their heads of government . . . and on and on, page after horrifying page.

Three questions we must ask ourselves:

Is this the kinder, gentler America?

Is this what the American people want as the U.S. response to glasnost?
