“The Last Remaining Seats III: Forty Years of Film--From Balconies to Backseats,” a series celebrating the spirit of the Golden Age of movie palaces, opens tonight at the Orpheum Theater with “The Student Prince,” a 1926 romantic comedy starring Ramon Navarro and Norma Shearer.

Gaylord Carter, who played at the Broadway movie premiere, will accompany the silent film on the organ. “Number Please,” a comic film short, and Academy-Award winning “Precious Images,” featuring clips from more than 500 classic films, will also be shown.

Hosted by the Los Angeles Conservancy, the third annual series--with screenings at 8 p.m. each Wednesday--will feature a month of classic films, live entertainment, and guest appearances by featured movie cast members.

Next Wednesday evening the Westlake Theater will feature the 1938 screwball comedy “Bringing Up Baby,” starring Cary Grant.

The Aug. 16 screening at the Los Angeles Theater will feature the Tex Avery cartoon “Swingshift Cinderella,” which helped inspire the Jessica Rabbit character in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” and the 1943 musical “Stormy Weather” starring Lena Horne, Fats Waller and Cab Calloway.

The final Wednesday showing, Aug. 23, at the Studio Drive In in Culver City will feature “The Girl Can’t Help It.” The 1956 comedy, starring Jayne Mansfield and Tom Ewell, includes musical appearances by Little Richard, Fats Domino and the Platters.
