Bid to Shut Landfill Appears Doomed

Share

An effort by Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich to close the city’s Lopez Canyon Landfill within 30 days if violations are not corrected appeared doomed Tuesday after a majority on the Board of Supervisors opposed his motion.

Antonovich’s motion to pressure the city of Los Angeles to reduce dumping at its Lake View Terrace dump was enthusiastically endorsed by the area’s homeowner groups.

But two supervisors, Kenneth Hahn and Deane Dana, said they would vote against the measure, and Supervisor Ed Edelman said he was leaning against it, too. The remaining supervisor, Pete Schabarum, who was not present, has indicated he opposes the proposal.

Faced with certain defeat, Antonovich postponed a vote on the matter until next Tuesday’s meeting.
