Alberto Diaz, publisher, reporter and editor for the Eastside Journal and Belvedere Citizen for 40 years and a public figure dubbed “Mr. East L.A.” for his efforts on behalf of that area, has died.

Diaz, for whom the Alberto Diaz Plaza in Belvedere County Park is named, was 72 when he died Friday of heart failure in Downey.

In 1962 he was named to the State Recreation Commission and two years later to the State Athletic Commission. Both appointments were by Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown.
