“The Killing Fields,” the movie that showed the brutality of Khmer Rouge rule in the 1970s in Cambodia, will be shown in a Cambodian theater Friday for the first time. Among those expected at the screening is Sidney Schanberg, the American journalist depicted in the 1984 Academy Award-winning film, making his first visit to Cambodia since he left there 14 years ago. The showing of the film in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, is being organized by Operation California, a U.S.-based relief agency. British director Roland Joffe said the screening was requested by Cambodian Premier Hun Sen to coincide with an international conference in Paris aimed at reconciling the fighting Cambodian factions, including Khmer Rouge guerrillas. A Cambodian film on the Khmer Rouge rule, “Shadow of Darkness,” also will be shown.
