A Virginia priest was fired from his job by his Roman Catholic bishop after announcing he would join the Rev. George A. Stallings in setting up a separate African-American Catholic congregation. “What is happening at Imani Temple is in my opinion the right method to take,” the Rev. Bruce Greening said, referring to the congregation set up by Stallings, himself suspended by Washington Archbishop James Hickey. Greening said he wanted “to challenge other black priests and other black sisters” to follow Stallings’ example. Greening, 38, was fired by the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, for which he had worked since 1988 as the principal of an elementary school in Norfolk.
