50,000 to 100,000 W. Germans Thought to Have AIDS Virus

Between 50,000 and 100,000 West Germans have probaby been infected with the AIDS virus, the Federal Health Office estimated Wednesday.

The office reported 3,636 cases of full-blown AIDS in West Germany and said 1,560 people have died of the disease since it first appeared here in 1981.

The authorities have registered 33,338 cases of infection with HIV, the virus that leads to acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

“An (estimated) total of 50,000 to 100,000 infected people in West Germany . . . is now commonly accepted,” the office said in a statement.

The office said one-third of all serious AIDS cases in the country have been registered in the past 12 months.

HIV infections can take several years to develop into AIDS.
