City Begins Delivery of Recycling Bins

City of Los Angeles workers are delivering free yellow trash bins to thousands of homes over the next two weeks to expand its pilot recycling programs to all 15 Los Angeles City Council districts.

In the second phase of the program, called Recycle L.A., the containers will be dropped off in portions of eight council districts in Northeast Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.

Special recycling trucks will begin weekly pickups a week after the initial delivery, said Gyl Elliott, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Sanitation. Residents will be asked to use the city containers for aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars and clear plastic soda bottles. Newspapers, either tied or in shopping bags, can also be placed beside the containers at curbside.

The expansion raises the number of homes participating in the city’s voluntary recycling pilot program to 90,000. Elliott said the bureau plans to propose citywide mandatory recycling within 30 days.
