Shanghai Halts Student Permits for Australia
Police in Shanghai, China’s biggest city, have stopped granting exit permits for many students trying to study in Australia, a local newspaper said.
Shanghai’s Liberation Daily said permits for privately financed students have been halted temporarily because of a huge backlog of unprocessed applications.
An Australian embassy spokesman said that about 25,000 Chinese have applied this year for privately financed study, mostly at special language schools. He expected the halt to be temporary and said it was not seen as a political act.
