Lakewood Pony Rides has just opened on an acre of the Lakewood Equestrian Center, 11369 E. Carson St., Lakewood. Owner Ann Smith, who has been in the party-pony business for years, turned to Griffith Park’s pony-ride experts for help in setting up her concession, now open weekends 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Smith has begun with nine ponies that walk around a ring. Each has a safety belt with a back support, making it possible for 1-year-olds to ride with parents walking alongside. The ponies are suitable for youngsters up to 100 pounds. Rides are $1.25 and last for several go-rounds. Smith plans to put in a larger ride area with a fence and more ponies (including trotters) by the end of summer.

Next to it is a petting farm with sheep, goats, ducks and turkeys. Smith has hand-raised all the animals so they are docile and used to the unpredictable ministrations of very young children. She also has guinea pigs, baby chicks, rabbits and tortoises in cages for a look-see--but no touching. Smith is on hand on weekends to answer questions. Admission to the petting farm is 50 cents per person or $1 per family. Information: (213) 850-1108.
