The World : Hungary Opposition Gains

Share

Hungary’s strongest opposition group defeated Communist candidates, winning two more parliamentary seats in the second round of the nation’s first free elections since 1947. Candidates of the Hungarian Democratic Forum easily won seats in Kecskemet, southeast of Budapest, and southern Szeged to add to the seat it won in Godollo in the first round of by-elections July 22. The fourth seat in Kiskunfelegyhaza was declared vacant when fewer than the mandatory 50% turned out to vote. The seat will remain vacant until parliamentary elections in mid-1990.
