Grand Plaza, a $36.4-million mixed-use complex featuring the first major chain supermarket in downtown Los Angeles, is now under construction in Chinatown.

A ground-breaking ceremony has been held at the site, Sunset Boulevard and Grand Avenue.

Scheduled for completion in the spring of 1991, the complex will include 53,000 square feet of retail space, anchored by a Market Basket supermarket, and 302 units of low-income senior citizen housing.

The project is being developed by Los Angeles-based L.A. Grand Ltd., owned by general partners David Mi and Lily Wong and limited partners Danny Ku and Douglas Boa.

Financing was provided by a $2.3-million grant from the Community Redevelopment Agency, a $1.55-million loan from the Community Development Department, and a $2.5-million Urban Development Action Grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, described as the “first UDAG awarded to any project in the western United States since 1983.”
