Two men were arrested in San Ysidro after two Mexican women and a 6-year-old boy were apparently robbed and held hostage when they failed to pay $1,500 for being smuggled across the U.S. border, a spokesman for the Border Patrol said. One woman escaped and summoned Border Patrol agents and the others were released unharmed when it was discovered she was gone, agents said. When they converged on the house, agents said they found five other undocumented aliens. San Diego police are investigating whether charges of kidnaping, false imprisonment or robbery should be filed. The women and child, who were not identified, were being held as material witnesses to a crime, officials said.
