Record Low Temperatures Snap Heat Wave Across Much of U.S.

Much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation cooled off today after a heat wave that toppled temperature records in at least eight states.

The summer break was most apparent for residents in the north-central United States, where temperatures early today were generally in the 50s and upper 40s.

In the hours after midnight, several record lows fell for the date, including at Kansas City, Mo., 55 degrees; Lincoln, Neb., 50; Marquette, Mich., 41; Des Moines, Iowa, 48; Chicago, 52; Topeka, Kan., 49; Milwaukee, 50, and South Bend, Ind., 46.

Strong thunderstorms developed Sunday night in east-central New Mexico, Texas, northwestern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

In Memphis, Tex., nearly two inches of rain fell in 45 minutes.

Early today, the thunderstorms and showers extended from New Mexico into Louisiana, with the strongest storms in Texas.
