San Diego police Monday were holding a man believed to be responsible for a 1987 slaying in Miami Beach.

Roland Stewart, 29, phoned police at 8 a.m. Monday and told them he had shot and killed Orlando Hawkins on Aug. 11, 1987, said Dave Cohen, a police spokesman.

Officers picked up Stewart at the Plaza International Hotel in Mission Valley and took him to police headquarters for questioning.
