A class-action lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Federal District Court in Los Angeles on behalf of 84,000 General Motors Corp. retirees alleging that the company illegally eliminated or reduced their health care and hospitalization benefits last year.

The suit asserts that General Motors took the action in March, 1988, despite promising lifetime health-care benefits to many who chose early retirement.

There are 24 Los Angeles County plaintiffs in the case, which contends that GM violated the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act.
