Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center has announced that it will begin construction this fall on a $21-million cardiac care center as part of the hospital’s 3-year-old East End expansion project.

About half of all patients at the hospital are treated for illnesses directly or indirectly related to cardiovascular disease, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Upon completion, the 120,000-square-foot facility will become Glendale’s first cardiac care center. Construction is to begin in November, and hospital officials have estimated the building will be finished in 2 1/2 years.

Services to be provided include an emergency department specializing in heart care, two cardiac catheterization laboratories, operating rooms and diagnostic facilities.

The center will make up 45% of a $24-million addition to the Los Feliz Boulevard structure.

Among the expansion and renovation on the eastern portion of the hospital grounds has been installation of an $8.5-million underground warehouse and central plant, a $3.7-million parking structure and a $3-million cancer center. A new lobby has also been added.
