Housing Proposal Rejected
The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday rejected a plan for a condominium and senior-citizen housing complex in the Barton Hill area of San Pedro. Some area residents and Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores opposed the plan for 100 condominiums to be built along with 68 apartments for low- and middle-income senior citizens.
Defeat of the proposal came with the council voting 12-0 against rezoning the three-acre property from light manufacturing to medium density residential. The project was proposed by developers George and Michael Tumanjan of Torrance, who bought the site at 515 Beacon St. in 1986 for $3.3 million.
The Tumanjans’ attorney, Doug Ring, could not be reached for comment.
Opponents had argued that the site, near busy Harbor Boulevard and ramps for the Vincent Thomas Bridge, is too far from shopping and churches for senior housing, would remove manufacturing space in a community that needs jobs and might gentrify the Barton Hill neighborhood.
The developers had argued to a council committee in June that the project would provide privately developed, affordable senior housing, which is in short supply.
