The East Bloc remains active in the espionage business in Switzerland despite glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), according to an official report released in Bern. The report by the state prosecutor said that the number of discovered spying cases has declined steadily since 1980, “but the proportion of Eastern espionage has steadily risen.” Switzerland divides its spying statistics into “East Bloc and Eastern-minded states” and “Others.” Of 91 cases discovered between 1980 and 1988, the report blamed 65 on the East.
