Bush Asked to Intervene in Eastern Strike: Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D-Ohio) urged President Bush to become involved in the five-month-long Eastern Airlines strike, despite an earlier decision by the President not to form an emergency board to help end the standoff. “I believe it is incumbent upon your Administration to show leadership in resolving this longstanding dispute,” the senator said in a letter to the White House. Metzenbaum, chairman of the subcommittee on labor and a leader in bringing to attention possible antitrust cases, said the sale of Eastern’s shuttle service to Donald J. Trump and the sale of other assets could signal the airline’s end.
