Gang Graffiti Mars Mural
It’s sad that an authentic Los Angeles original should be so unappreciated by us all. Artist Kent Twitchell’s mural is joyous serendipity every time my windshield frames it (Metro, July 27). What a waste to drive it, and its magic, away through indifference.
In Paris there is no graffiti. The metro stations have art for all to enjoy. The Louvre and Jean de Pomme let you touch irreplaceable masterpieces. Yet no one does. No one would abuse this highest trust. They understand the magic of art.
It’s time for us to, as well. To appreciate Twitchell and his like by encouraging and keeping “hands off” their work. Its magic is for everyone. It crosses gang lines. It gives the hopeless hope. Defacing art is crushing butterflies: Anyone can do it, but the world shrinks for us all each time it’s done.
