The government Monday announced the voluntary recall of 250,000 hand-held hair dryers that can cause electrocution when immersed in water in the off position, and it warned that an additional 80 million dryers already sold pose the same danger.

The dryers and the companies involved in the voluntary recall are the Pomair Pro 2100 and 1900, MBR Industries Inc., Miami; the Mustang MU 2100, Mustang Electronics Inc., Hallandale, Fla.; the Major Styling Dryer Model 1250, Major International Inc., Orange, Calif., and the Minimate Hair Dryer and Iron DS-601, China Bazaar, San Francisco.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said accidents involving the devices kill about 17 people a year.
