Mission Viejo : Plans for Lake Wall Shut Down for One Year

The City Council has extended by one year a moratorium on plans to erect a 1,600-foot wall along Lake Mission Viejo.

The council on Monday night decided, on a 5-0 vote, to extend an earlier 45-day moratorium it had placed on the controversial project until July9. Representatives of the Lake Mission Viejo Assn., which is in favor of the wall, indicated afterward that they will ask for an exemption from a citywide moratorium on erecting barriers over recreational areas adjoining streets and highways.

The association wants to erect the wall along the lake front on the north side of Alicia Parkway. Homeowners who live on the waterway say a buffer, from three to five feet high, is needed to shield it from the traffic noise and litter that comes from the thoroughfare.

But some other residents say the barrier would be an eyesore that would block part of the view of the 124-acre, man-made lake.

The city Planning Commission is to hear the association’s exemption request at 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at City Hall, 26522 La Alameda.
