Jordan’s first general parliamentary elections in 22 years will be held Nov. 8, Prime Minister Zeid Bin Shaker said. His announcement, carried by the official Jordan News Agency, said the date was set by the Cabinet in accordance with King Hussein’s election decree earlier this month. Interior Minister Salem Massadeh said about 1,400 candidates would run for a Parliament of 80 seats, and he said candidate registration would start Saturday. A ban on political parties, in effect since a coup attempt in 1957, remains in force, so candidates will run as individuals.
