More than 40 people have died in 180 car accidents in Greece since Friday when nearly 1 million people left Athens for the countryside to spend the holiday of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, police said Tuesday.

Another 320 were injured in the four-day holiday climaxing Tuesday with a Solemn Mass in the Greek Orthodox cathedral of the Virgin Mary on the island of Tinos. Police said 70 of the injured were in critical condition.
