Southeast Elections : 3 Whittier Districts Attract Most Candidates : 45 Will Run in 8 School Board Elections Nov. 7

Forty-five candidates, including 14 incumbents, are vying for election this November to eight school boards in the Whittier, Santa Fe Springs and Pico Rivera areas.

Three school districts in Whittier have drawn the most candidates, with 24 people signing up to run in the Nov. 7 election.

In the Whittier Union High School District election, seven candidates, including two incumbents, are competing for three board spots.

Eight candidates, including one incumbent, are fighting for three board seats in the Whittier City School District.

In the East Whittier City School District, where until a week ago no one was running, nine candidates have entered the race. Seven candidates, including one incumbent, will be competing for three board seats. Two candidates will be vying for an unexpired term.

Here is a list of the candidates who have signed up to run in the election:

Whittier Union High School District (three seats):

John Rios (incumbent), Bruce Sago, Octavio (Toby) Chavez, Charles Henderson Boles Morgan, Eve Burnett (incumbent), Donald Hawkins and Fred Steiner. Board President Joan Nay is not seeking reelection.

Whittier City School District (three seats):

Owen Newcomer, James Albanese, A. Roy Salas, Sandra Kersley, Reed Wilson, J.C. (Mac) McFarland, Peggy Mathews and Mildred Early (incumbent). Board members Ermila Corral and Janet Henke did not enter the race.

East Whittier City School District (three seats and one unexpired term):

Susan Hunder Eiden, Paula Hodgin (incumbent), Michael Martinet, Benjamin Rich, R.S. (Rudy) Valdez, Cathy Warner and David Weitzel are competing for three seats on the board. Board members James Stewart and Shirley Nielson have not entered the race.

Candy Harris and C. Randy King are competing to fill the term of Fred Campbell, who plans to resign Aug. 28 because he is moving out of the district.

Los Nietos School District (three seats):

Paul Delgado, Alan Kartsman, C. Gloria Duran, C. Renee Frazier (incumbent) and Angelica Johnson (incumbent). Board member Leonard Munoz is not seeking reelection.

Lowell Joint School District (three seats):

Jerry Powell (incumbent), Janet Averill (incumbent) Joyce Canfield (incumbent) and Pam Overstreet.

South Whittier School District (three seats):

David Gonzales Hayes (incumbent), Manuel Magana, Richard Thomas Minjaras and Tim Schneider (incumbent). Board member Keith Pust is not seeking reelection.

El Rancho Unified School District (three seats):

Dimas Benavides, Frank Boyce (incumbent), Frank Millan, E.A. (Pete) Ramirez (incumbent) and Mary Lou Ramirez. Board member Albert Cortez is not seeking reelection.

Little Lake City School District (two seats):

Angela Gabriel Obregon, May Sharp (incumbent) and Armida Trujillo. Board member Richard Moore is not seeking reelection.
