U.S. Team Makes a Big Splash at Pan Pacific Meet

TOKYO — Doug Gjertsen set a meet record in the men’s 200-meter freestyle as the powerful American team won six of the nine events today at opening of the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships.
Australia, Canada and Japan won one event each in the 50-meter Yoyogi National Olympic Swimming Pool.
Gjertsen led all the way in the 200-meter freestyle, winning in 1 minute, 49.09 seconds and breaking the meet record of 1:49.12 set by American Craig Oppel in 1987.
American Jon Olsen placed second with 1:49.47, followed by Canadian Turlough O’Hare with 1:50.23.
