City Councilman Hosea Williams, a former aide to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and a longtime civil rights activist, joined six political unknowns in the race for mayor of Atlanta against Maynard Jackson, a former mayor. Williams, 63, offers the most serious challenge to Jackson’s comeback attempt. Last week, the withdrawal of Jackson’s sole announced opponent, Fulton County Commissioner Michael Lomax, had cleared the way for him to return to City Hall for a third term.
