THE SIDELINES : Longo, E. Germans Win Cycling Gold

LYON, France — France’s Jeannie Longo and the East German men’s team added more gold medals to their collections as they picked up world titles today at the World Cycling Championships.
Longo won her third women’s individual pursuit title by taking the 3-kilometer event while the East Germany took the men’s team pursuit, upsetting the Olympic champion Soviet Union.
Longo, who holds more than 10 world records, had to come from behind to beat Petra Rossner of East Germany in 3 minutes, 54.45 seconds. Rossner did 3:55.31.
The East German men won the team title for the time in 10 years. They won by more than a second, 4:16.59 to 4:18.54.
