London Broil

There’s trouble between the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and London’s new, five-star Hampshire Hotel. Point of dispute: Oscar’s, the establishment’s glitzy, Academy Award-themed brasserie, and the Academy’s registered Oscar image.

Because of the Academy’s demands--and threats of legal action--the hotel has agreed to rip up its Oscar-decorated carpet, and get rid of such paraphernalia as Oscar swizzle sticks and matchbooks.

Still undecided, according to a hotel rep, is whether the hotel will bow to Academy requests to place apologetic advertising.

The rep was regretful: “We love our theme. . . . It’s become a really popular place. We’re upset at the prospect of having to change a success.”

But Academy exec administrator Ric Robertson said, “It’s non-negotiable. Licensing is not a possibility in this case.”
