Gay South African Anti-Apartheid Activist to Speak at Unity Fellowship Church

Simon Nkoli, a gay anti-apartheid black South African activist, will speak at the morning worship service of Unity Fellowship Church, 5149 Jefferson Blvd., at 11:30 a.m. next Sunday.

Nkoli, who spent three years in a South African jail before being acquitted of treason charges, will be honored at a benefit reception at 8 p.m. Saturday at the home of Travis Emory, 1616 W. 25th St.

His Los Angeles visit is part of an extensive tour of the United States and Canada and is sponsored by Unity Fellowship Center, Black and White Men Together and The Black Gay and Lesbian Leadership Forum.

Nkoli will be honored at a reading by lesbian and gay writers at 7 p.m. next Sunday at A Different Light Bookstore, 4041 Santa Monica Blvd. At 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28 he will speak at a Free South Africa Forum at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 514 W. Adams Blvd.
